Let us follow these little steward through one of their busy busy days... Everyday, as the sun rises, so do they. Through the night, the bubbles in their glistening nest have slowly ruptured one by one. Finally, when the last bubble pops and the heat of the day begins to warm the pond, all the stewards awaken from their slumber.
They flow out from their little homes underneath smooth stones and within old seed pods, forming a beautiful orderly stream of iridescently blue exoskelton shells. From this rippling hoard, some split off towards the north to care for the great archives, while others glide easts to tend to the brine shrimp herds. There are many tasks in this watery world that need doing and for each and every task there is a steward perfectly formed to do it.
If asked, a steward could not tell you why it wants to do what it does, for it is a strong unexplainable force that draws them to their greater task. A steward that loves to seek out and guard the pool's salamander eggs are brave and bold, while those who prefer to cultivate the algae field tend to be patient and more meek.
Tending to the algae is a crucial task, for the algae grown in the fields feed all the little stewards and light all the darker vernal pool pathes. They are grown in small clusters where the sunlight is brightest and the waters warmest. Two varieties have been grown for almost as long as the stewards archives recall, one a bright green algae that glows under the silver moonlight, while the other, a deep blue cultivare, makes for a tasty and filling meal.
Every dusk, as the waters begin to cool, the little stewards pause their various tasks and begin to swim home. They converge upon a clearing in the middle of their little ring of houses, and as the skies fully darken, together they eat their daily meal among clumps of bright glowing algae. When they have eaten their fill, they begin to slip off one by one to build their bubble nests and prepare for the coming day. Click here my dear reader to return to the front page.
